Equilibrio Instabile by Jean-François D’Or / Installation / Lake Como Italy

As in previous editions, one of the most interesting sections is certainly the Contemporary Design Selection, curated by Giovanna Massoni. With Equilibrio Instabile, Eulogy to Audacity, the Belgian designer Jean-François D’Or has literally reinvented Columbus’s egg. Inspired by a conversation with a neuroscientist, he set out to create an object capable of representing the concept of audacity. The result is 200 wooden cubes topped by a wooden egg that can stand still thanks to a hidden magnetic dot. A matter of millimeters, it’s easier to let it roll away than to keep it balanced.

Ten Forms of Lightness Lake Como Design Festival. COOL HUNTING ® Villa del Grumello.

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN SELECTION / Lake Como Design Festival.

In collaboration with Villa del Grumello Association and Antonio Ratti Foundation, the edition opens Chilometro della Conoscenza as part of the new exhibition route. Through 15 hectares of centuries-old parks, much like a dispersed kunsthalle, the projects selected by Giovanna Massoni will find space. This creates a new, widespread exhibition path, immersed in greenery and overlooking the shores of Lake Como.

CHILOMETRO DELLA CONOSCENZA / Villa del Grumello

Villa del Grumello has been mentioned since the 15th. Residence for the Como patriciate due to its privileged location by the lake, surrounded by vineyards, a lawn, and a rich orchard of walnut and chestnut trees.
The Villa belongs to influential families such as the Odescalchi, Giovio, and Celesia, hosting prominent figures such as Ugo Foscolo and Vincenzo Monti.
Restored in 2006, it turns into a dynamic cultural center focused on innovation. It now hosts cultural and scientific events through seminars, residencies, and exhibitions.

In reference to the Christopher Columbus anecdote, an unusual egg can only remain upright when perched on one of the edges of its base, where a magnet is subtly concealed. Precarious stability, an ode to daring. In the face of this affront of imbalance and uncertainty, the object provokes interaction and dialogue.

Through its form, symbolism, essence and finish, the object suggests a sensitive tactile approach.
