Cap Bénat, 30 juillet 1490.

" It was July. The sun poured its photons through the small skylight set against the high vault. Like a carpet of pollen deposited by a astral insect, these fine particles spread delicately across the floor, forming a clear, golden circle. By what mystery, by what mechanism, by what grace, did this blond disc begin to move, to deform, to lengthen, to glide slowly, creeping across the floor, then to lick the wall and climb it? Young Copernicus, careful not to stumble, followed its trace, meticulously noting its imprints and contours. This patch, sometimes mimosa, sometimes lemon, seemed in its movement to inscribe the very essence of summer."

A constellation of identical volumes unfolds on the floor. These enigmatic pieces are arranged there like fragments of an unknown language or fossilized remnants of a forgotten ritual. Their mass is evident, their silence weighty. At first glance, everything seems suspended, frozen.

Every fifteen minutes, a chime from the brass piece rings signaling the start of the performance. In a choreography of precise gestures, the wheels begin to move. Once set in motion, they oscillate with a hypnotic slowness.Their swaying evolves in rhythm with their cadence, bordering on perpetual motion. Without a clear destination, they roll without apparent logic, tracing uninterrupted tangents. The groans of their rolling murmur in the silence of the sacred space. Reinforcing the mechanics of a ritual we are witnessing, the performance immerses us in a contemplative state, removed from the tumult of the world.

Because of the gaping holes in their upper sections, these unusual wheels have a displaced center of gravity. This gives them both stability and, once in motion, a hypnotic swaying. They contain a potential energy that renders them in a state of constant tension, ready to tip over. What was thought to be fixed reveals another truth. These Dancing Suns appear at rest, yet carry within them this potential for movement.

The installation becomes a terrain of latent tension. The visitor understands that they are in a field of dormant forces, and their attention is drawn to what might waver. This installation questions the materialization of movement. How to give it form and unfold it in space ? How to express, contain, and constrain this kinetic potential ? It contrasts apparent stability with a possible imbalance. Through their shape, mass and movement, these unusual dancers mimic a solar journey. An endless ballet of celestial bodies swirling through the Universe for the duration of a summer. Why must the sun revolve ?

Inscribed on a large bannerJean-François D’Or’s text does not directly describe the installation, and this is precisely what makes it a subtle and poetic complement. It acts as a narrative mirror or counterpoint, enriching the dense, minimal, and almost silent material of the work. The text itself recounts a scene of observation, almost mythological. It adds an implicit narrative. The installation then becomes a natural or astronomical phenomenon, and the viewer, like Copernicus, is the one who observes the traces, interprets the signs, and measures the world’s shifting nature.

Outside of performance times, a soundtrack accompanies the installation. It calmly breaks the silence and plays recordings of drum rolls at different cadences. Suggesting their shifting motions, these sounds create an ambiguity between the static pieces and their latent movements. These almost hypnotic whispers are occasionally mixed with solar electromagnetic waves converted into sound waves. The mimicry between this solar chant and the sound of the pieces swaying is striking.
