Compacted in the chromosomes, our DNA is comparable to a text of 3 billion letters and written only with the letters A, T, G and C; symbols of the molecules that make up DNA.

Life is often compared to a book in several chapters, or even several volumes. Many people think that every day is a blank page. Nevertheless, the book is far from virgin. A part is already written in the genes.

Resulting from the fertilization of an oocyte by a spermatozoid, all our cells except the sexual cells carry 23 pairs of chromosomes, 23 from our mother and from our father. Together they form our genome, which cells harbor in their nucleus. 

Compacted in the chromosomes, our DNA is comparable to a text of 3 billion letters and written only with the letters A, G, T, C (Adenine, Guanine, Thymine, Cytosine) ; symbols of the molecules that make up DNA. 

It is the precise order of these 4 letters that constitutes genetic information. These are the genes that decide the fate of our cells. These drafts revealed only the beginning of the story ; the scrolls containing the instructions for life. 

Thanks to those symbolic AGTC page plates, the mécènes of the Fonds Erasme financed the acquisition of a complete genome sequencer of 20.000 genes. This fundraising allows ULB Brussels University and Erasme hospital genetic research to grow up.

These symbolic pages of the book of life cut out of massive metals express the codified dance of these 4 letters AGTC which are the basis of our unique genome. 

Forming a sort of moucharabieh, these perforated interpenetrated letters expresses both the complexity of our genome sequencing and its subtle arrangement that determines our lives.

Thanks to those symbolic AGTC page plates, the mécènes of the Fonds Erasme financed the acquisition of a complete genome sequencer of 20.000 genes. 

This fundraising allows ULB Brussels University and Erasme hospital genetic research to grow up.
