Each human being is made up of some 100,000 billion cells. Resulting from the fertilization of an oocyte by a spermatozoid, all our cells except the sexual cells carry 23 pairs of chromosomes, 23 from our mother and from our father. Together they form our genome, which cells harbor in their nucleus. Compacted in the chromosomes, our DNA is comparable to a text of 3 billion letters and written only with the letters A, T, G and C; symbols of the molecules that make up DNA.

Life is often compared to a book in several chapters, or even several volumes. Many people think that every day is a blank page. But the book is far from virgin. A part is already written in the genes.

Chaque être humain est constitué de plusieurs milliards de cellules. Chacune de nos cellules abrite, dans son noyau, de l’information génétique codée par ce qu’on appelle des gènes. Un gène est constitué d’ADN. C’est-à-dire une longue molécule, compactée dans les chromosomes, composée uniquement de quatre lettres A, G, T et C. A pour ADENINE, G pour GUANINE, T pour THYMINE et C pour CYTOSINE. C’est l’ordre précis de ces 4 lettres qui constitue l’information génétique. Ce sont les gènes qui « décident » du devenir de nos cellules.

Les mécènes du Fonds Erasme ont financé l'acquisition d'un séquenceur du génome complet soit 20 000 gènes. Ces pages symboliques du livre de la vie illustrent ce généreux soutien.


Elke mens bestaat uit enkele miljard cellen. Elk van onze cellen bevat genetische informatie gecodeerd door zogenaamde genen in zijn kern. Een gen bestaat uit DNA. Dat wil zeggen een lang molecuul, verdicht in de chromosomen, dat alleen bestaat uit vier letters A, G, T en C. A voor ADENINE, G voor GUANINE, T voor THYMINE en C voor CYTOSINE.

Het is de precieze volgorde van deze 4 letters die de informatie vormt genetica. Dit zijn de genen die het lot van onze cellen "beslissen".
